Sensory Safaris offer a unique opportunity to the visually impaired. Children and adults are escorted by knowledgeable “safari guides” through a variety of touchable displays of animal, fish and bird mounts, skins, skulls and horns. The guides describe the animals and their habitats and behaviors as participants touch and sometimes even hug the displays. Sensory Safaris can be held year-around and be located virtually anywhere, giving visually impaired children and adults a hands-on wildlife education. Since the first Sensory Safari in 1991, there have been more than 460 Sensory Safaris sponsored by Safari Club. By midyear, over 18,000 individuals were exposed to wildlife through this program in 2002 alone, surpassing total attendance in 2000. Thousands of SCI volunteer guides have donated their time and taxidermy mounts, skins, skulls and horns.
