Welcome Hunting Season,
Well it’s now autumn for all of us, and for most of us, it is also our favorite season of the year! This means we will be out and about in the fields and woods and in our tree stands and ground blinds enjoying what nature has provide for us by exercising our right to hunt. This year take a little time to remember the person that introduced you to this great sport, and then make an effort to introduce someone else to the great outdoors.
Myself, I question how the current generation of kids can develop and hone their communication and interpersonal skills given their complete preoccupation with I-Pods, cell phones and hand-held texting devices which tend to reduce their direct interaction with real humans to almost zilch. It is my opinion that there is nothing better than at the end of your hunting day sitting outdoors around a campfire at hunting camp with your hunting group while enjoying some refreshments and recounting the day's hunting events amid plenty of laughs and some occasional BS.
This year I plan on having a lot of those talks with my old hunting buddies plus the new friends that I have met through SCI Detroit Chapter. Last year, I participated in a few hunts that Matt Norman arranged for the chapter, and I had a great time with these guys. We got a few geese and a couple of rabbits, but we sure shared a lot of laughs and a lot of fun doing that.. That’s why being a member of this organization has its rewards when you participate in the events. You really see that these people share a lot of the same interests and values that you have. During this next year, we have some great membership meetings planned, and if luck has it, maybe some new winter local hunts.
The BOD is currently working on the upcoming fundraiser event in February. We have some great donated hunts and trips coming in, including some from new outfitters to our big event. It will be very busy that weekend with all that is planned! We are currently looking for volunteers to help out that weekend. If you, or someone you know, would like to help, please contact Tom Pardo at 586-770-6712.
We are also working on all the other elements that make SCI Detroit so valuable: education, humanitarian, conservation, right to hunt, etc.
So this hunting season get out there and have some fun, take pictures and share them with our website www.scidetroit.com or with our chapter magazine “Trajectory”. We are always looking for hunting stories to share. Enjoy the fall colors and the bounties of the land and don’t forget to put some on the dinner table also!
Best of luck,
Ray Hollingsworth
