Each year, the SCI Detroit chapter contributes significant funds to further wildlife conservation. By far, most of these contributions are channeled through the SCI Michigan Involvement Committee (MIC) to Michigan
wildlife research projects under the direction of the Michigan Deparment
of Natural Resources (MDNR).
The Detroit Chapter is a charter member of
MIC, which is a committee consisting of a chapter-designated representative
from each participating SCI chapter located in Michigan. MIC meets quarterly
with the MDNR to fund specific research projects, to monitor the progress
of these research projects, and to keep up-to-date on Michigan wildlife
information.
Detroit chapter chooses to channel most of its conservation donations
through MIC because of how these funds get leveraged through matching
funds from Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF) and then the United
States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to a total amount several times
the original donation.
The leveraging process works as follows: Detroit
chapter donates $3000 to MIC for an approved wildlife reseach project
which is then matched by $2000 from SCIF, and then that total of $5000 is
matched 3:1 by Pittman-Robertson funds from USFWS to bring the new
total funding for the MDNR wildlife research project to $20,000.

For the past three years (2007, 2008 & 2009), the SCI Detroit Chapter has channeled its conservation project donations to MIC to the MDNR Predator/Prey research study. The field work for this project began in earnest in January 2009.
