Each year, depending on the chapter's financial situation and the availability of qualifying candidates, the Detroit Chapter honors local disabled veterans by either taking a group of them on a group hunt at a local facility (like a European style pheasant hunt) or by taking one recommended disabled veteran on a fully outfitted and guided big game hunt in another state or in another country.

Local disabled veterans need to contact the SCI Detroit Chapter to be considered for participation in this program. See a personal account by one disabled veteran who was awarded a big game hunt (bottom of this page).

Note: Frank Krolczyk of Warren, Michigan was an Infantryman in Vietnam in 1968 when he was seriously wounded. He has since worked for the Disabled American Veteran organization for over 30 years diligently helping other Veterans. Frank was selected by the Detroit Chapter of Safari Club International as the recipient of an expense paid African hunting trip. In early November 2003, Frank and his wife Jane went on that trip. Following is his account of the hunt.

A Hunt of a Lifetime!
By Frank Krolczyk

Our odyssey began when we left Detroit Metro Airport on an evening flight to Atlanta. We spent the night at the Radisson Hotel and the next morning boarded South African Airlines to Johannesburg and onto our final destination to Windhoek.

We were met by at the airport by the staff of Nimrod Safaris; Kobus Honiball and Etienne Langeveldt. We spent the evening in Windhoek at a very nice guesthouse, departing the next morning for the hunting area. Upon arrival we quickly settled in, done some practice shooting with the rifles, then began our hunt.

The setting African sun quickly made one think that collecting a trophy was not going to be an easy task. The first kudu bull I saw standing majestically on top of the hill made me wonder if I had enough rifle to do the job. P.H. Kobus Honiball assured me that the 300 Win Mag was up to the task if I did my job with good bullet placement. We continued on the rough trails to the riverbed in search of a trophy kudu. Before nightfall we sighted an enormous bull. He was running away from us up a hill. Everything happened so fast: The guide said, “shoot”, my wife was shouting encouragement to me. All I remember is “this is a great bull”. I quickly sighted, touched the trigger, and my trophy kudu went down immediately. After making our way up to it I stood there looking at my magnificent animal. I immediately wanted to thank the Detroit Chapter of Safari Club International for this precious moment that I will never forget.
